If there’s any reference to this beautiful new Jim Black album (the classic piano trio format with double-bass), it’s of course the Keith Jarrett’s early ones (Charlie Haden, Paul Motian). I can’t tell how consciously it has been decided, but to me Jim’s playing here often sounds as a personal re-reading of that music. But no parody, no stepping into someone else’s shoes at all, a real original actual version, full of amazing moments, directions taken, points opened, stories offered and told, sometime even whispered. A real joy (despite Elias Stemeseder’s piano voice, which is sometimes too obvious).
