In ancient Chinese philosophy, YIN YANG (/jɪn/ and /jɑːŋ, jæŋ/; Chinese: 陰 陽 yīnyáng, lit. ‘dark-bright’, ‘negative-positive’) refers to a concept of dualism, describing how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be in balance, complementary, and i nterdependent in the natural world. The Maastricht-based band known as Yīn Yīn, however, embraces misbalance and its contemplative freedom in order to push the boundaries of its creative musicality.
At a ballet school in a remote village near the Alpaca Mountain, Yīn Yīn started out as an in-studio experimental project by Kees Berkers and Yves Lennertz, exploring the potentialities of South East Asian music from the 60’s and 70’s. Over the last years, the project has evolved into an energetic live experience, celebrating a mix of world
music, disco, funk and electro, deeply infused with the individual musical background of its individual members.
With the introduction of Robbert Verwijlen on keys and Remy
Scheren playing bass, and with percussionist Gino Bombrini joining them on their live tours, Yīn Yīn has developed into an immersive, psychedelic live presence able to
captivate a broad audience, and get people dancing. With their debut tape titled ‘Pingpxng’, Yīn Yīn set the stage for a collaborative practice
that combines the specific musical interests of its members, as well as the interaction
between individual interests and music genres from all over the world.
Constantly adhering to a radical experimental attitude, they have been able to discover and create new forms of music, not being bothered by any boundaries or limitations.
After two 7” releases on Bongo Joe Records and Paradiso Vinyl Club, their long- awaited album ‘The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers’ will be released on November 9, 2019.
The album brilliantly reflects the continuous ambition of Yīn Yīn to invert and re-invent
the musical landscape they have shaped through their avid record collecting and
rebellious live adaptations. A landscape where rabbits chase after tigers. Indeed, the future looks bright for Yīn Yīn.
