The VIO engages in a special discourse of non-notated, experimental composition and complex improvised music for large ensembles, using a vocabulary of hand signs. Close to developments by Bruno Maderna or John Zorn, particularely within a continuation of Butch Morris’ Conduction, and a remote relationship to Soundpainting, the VIO nevertheless developed its own praxis: the instant composition conducting is conveyed by quite few hand signs only; no pre-prepared or agreed-upon parts/modules/designs, no rehearsals, just an introductory explanation of the hand signs and a brief try out; absolute instant creation also by the conductor; performed pieces last at least 30 minutes.

Guest at the legendary Moers Festival in 2022, the VIO received standing ovations; the orchestra has also performed (with ever changing line-ups) at Wien Modern, Künstlerhaus Wien, Belvedere21, Vienna Art Week Festival a.m.o.
