TONSPUR_display #6 Charlemagne Palestine

Der 1947 in New York geborene und in Brüssel lebende Komponist und bildende Künstler Charlemagne Palestine gestaltet im Rahmen seiner Artist-in-Residence die bereits sechste Ausstellung im 2022 eröffneten TONSPUR_display | Schauraum TONSPUR Kunstverein Wien. Unverwechselbar sind Palestines raumgreifende Installationen und Environments mit einer Vielzahl von Stoff- und Plüschtieren. Der Künstler nennt diese “Gottheiten”.

Mit “““MiniMeshuggahhTonspurLaandtttt!!!””” schuf der Pionier der Minimal Music, der sich diesem Label jedoch verweigert und für seine Musik den Begriff des Maximalismus reklamiert, bereits 2016 eine unvergessene Klanginstallation als Beitrag zur TONSPUR_collection. Die zwei unübersehbaren Discokugeln der TONSPUR_passage erinnern bis heute an die eindrückliche TONSPUR 72, die über den Klang hinaus als bisher einzige Installation auch visuelle, bildnerische Elemente enthielt. So waren die acht Lautsprecher des Klangraums mit bunten Schals und Kopftüchern und aufgeklebten Augen individualisiert.

Wie nun wird Charlemagne Palestine das ’nur‘ 10 m2 große TONSPUR_display in Szene setzen?
During his residency at the MQ, Charlemagne Palestine designs the 6th exhibition in the TONSPUR_display | Schauraum TONSPUR Kunstverein Wien, which opens in 2022. Palestine’s expansive installations and environments with a multitude of stuffed and plush animals are unmistakable. The artist calls these divinities.

With “““MiniMeshuggahhTonspurLaandtttt!!!””” the pioneer of minimal music, who nevertheless refuses this label and claims the concept of maximalism for his music, already created an unforgettable sound installation in 2016 as a contribution to the TONSPUR_collection. The two unmistakable disco balls of the TONSPUR_passage are still reminiscent of the impressive TONSPUR 72, which, beyond sound, was the only installation to date that also contained visual, pictorial elements. The eight loudspeakers of the sound space, for example, were individualized with colorful scarves and bandanas. And the white boxes were even stylized into sounding heads and faces by means of glued-on pieces of black felt.
