Freedom and Urbanity – Istanbul through Photographs

(EN) In the framework of FOTO WIEN 2025, we warmly invite you to the exhibition opening and panel discussion Freedom and Urbanity: Istanbul through Photographs, held at Fabrikraum.

The exhibition Istanbul: Spaces of Freedom by Slovenian photographer Manca Juvan presents a moment in the life of the eponymous metropolis and its changing relationship to the ideal of urban freedom. Through her lens, Istanbul emerges as a city where freedom is constantly negotiated—lived, lost, and reclaimed in the rhythms of everyday life. Inspired by this exhibition, the interdisciplinary panel Freedom and Urbanity will explore how photography can reveal both the presence and the absence of freedom in the urban experience of modern Istanbul.

About the Artist

Manca Juvan is a Slovenian photographer, videographer, and educator with over two decades of global experience. Her internationally acclaimed monograph Guardians of the Spoon (winner of the 2017 International PhotoBook Award) and her long-term project Afghanistan: Unordinary Lives reveal her deep commitment to documenting humanity’s resilience.

Her most recent work, Istanbul: Faces of Freedom, was created in collaboration with Oto Luthar and the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It explores the concept of freedom within the urban context, using Istanbul as its focal point.en aleman

Author of Architecture and the Late Ottoman Historical Imaginary, Ersoy’s research focuses on the visual culture and media technologies of the late Ottoman Empire.

Z. Umut Türem (University of Vienna)
Chasing Freedom in the Streets of Istanbul: Then and Now
Researcher in sociology of law and modern Turkish history. His work examines authoritarian political formations and the socio-economic foundations of urban change.

(DE)  Im Rahmen von FOTO WIEN 2025 laden wir Sie herzlich zur Eröffnung und Podiumsdiskussion Freedom and Urbanity: Istanbul through Photographs im Fabrikraum ein.

Die Ausstellung Istanbul: Spaces of Freedom der slowenischen Fotografin Manca Juvan zeigt einen Moment im Leben der gleichnamigen Metropole und ihre sich wandelnde Beziehung zum Ideal der urbanen Freiheit. Durch Juvans Linse erscheint Istanbul als eine Stadt, in der Freiheit ständig neu ausgehandelt wird – gelebt, verloren und im Rhythmus des Alltags wiedergewonnen. Inspiriert von dieser Ausstellung wird das interdisziplinäre Podiumsgespräch Freedom and Urbanity untersuchen, wie Fotografie sowohl die Anwesenheit als auch die Abwesenheit von Freiheit im urbanen Erleben des modernen Istanbul sichtbar machen kann.

Über die Künstlerin

Manca Juvan ist eine slowenische Fotografin, Videokünstlerin und Dozentin mit über zwei Jahrzehnten internationaler Erfahrung. Ihr international anerkanntes Fotobuch Guardians of the Spoon (Gewinner des International PhotoBook Award 2017) und ihr Langzeitprojekt Afghanistan: Unordinary Lives zeigen ihr tiefes Engagement, menschliche Widerstandsfähigkeit zu dokumentieren.

Ihr neuestes Werk, Istanbul: Faces of Freedom, entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Oto Luthar und dem Forschungszentrum der Slowenischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste. Es untersucht das Konzept der Freiheit im urbanen Kontext und nutzt Istanbul als zentralen Bezugspunkt.
