Genius Loci, Bierdümpfl & Widauer

In der klassischen römischen Religion war ein Genius Loci (Pl.: Genii locorum) der Schutzgeist eines Ortes. Im heutigen Sprachgebrauch bezieht sich Genius Loci meist auf die unverwechselbare Atmosphäre eines Ortes oder den „Geist des Ortes“ und nicht unbedingt auf einen Schutzgeist.

Als tourende Musiker sind Wietse Voermans, Ruud Voesten, Lorenz Widauer und Daniel Bierdümpfl bereits an vielen verschiedenen, einzigartigen Orten aufgetreten. In ihrem neuen Projekt „Genius Loci“ nutzen sie ihre Bühne nicht nur als Ort der Darbietung, sondern machen sie zu einem aktiven Teil ihres Kompositions- und Improvisationsprozesses. Geschichten über den Ort, die Stadt oder die Mitarbeiter, eine besondere Akustik oder einfach nur eine sehr kleine, beengte Bühne werden zu entscheidenden Faktoren in der Musik. Der Hauptteil der Musik entsteht improvisiert und bewegt sich an den Grenzen dessen, was diese Besetzung zu bieten hat. Laut, leise, schön oder hässlich.

Nachdem sie sich in Rotterdam kennengelernt und dort zum ersten Mal gespielt hatten, beschlossen Ruud, Wietse und Daniel, ihre Zusammenarbeit fortzusetzen, wobei sie den Raum als aktiven Teil und Schwerpunkt der Improvisation erkunden. Sie experimentieren mit Akustik, alternativen Konzert- und Performance-Modellen, von zeitgenössischen Kompositionsmethoden bis hin zur freien Improvisation.

In classical Roman religion, a genius loci (pl.: genii locorum) was the protective spirit of a place. In contemporary usage, genius loci usually refers to a location’s distinctive atmosphere or a „spirit of the place“ rather than necessarily a guardian spirit.

As touring musicians, Wietse Voermans, Ruud Voesten, Lorenz Widauer & Daniel Bierdümpfl have performed at many different unique places.

In their new project ‚Genius Loci‘ they use their stage not only as a place for performing, but make it an active participant in their compositional and improvisational process. Stories about the location, the city or the employees, a particular set of acoustics or just a very small, tight stage all become deciding factors in the music. The main part of the music will be created in an improvisational fashion and moves between the limits of what this line up has to offer. Loud, soft, beautiful or ugly.

After meeting and playing in Rotterdam for the first time Ruud, Wietse and Daniel decided to continue their cooperation based on exploring Space as an active part and focus of improvisation. Experimenting with acoustics, alternative concert & performance models, from contemporary compositional methods to free improvisation.
